Coping With the Itch

Be careful while working or relaxing outdoors this summer. An allergic reaction to poison ivy (pictured), poison oak, or poison sumac could land you in a doctor's office to reduce symptoms of painful burning, itching, and blistering.

For a severe reaction, your healthcare provider may suggest taking oral corticosteroids. If that happens, be sure your provider knows you have diabetes. Corticosteroid pills can cause your blood glucose (and blood pressure) to rise, making managing your levels more difficult.

Your author ran into some poison ivy herself recently and found the site www.poison-ivy.org useful in helping to avoid it in the future.
